From lemons to leadership

February is the best month to enjoy citrus fruit, according to the BBC. My choice? The humble lemon, once a luxurious fruit reserved for the elite now resting on my kitchen counter about to be turned into a delicious lemon cake. The leadership journey can often feel like perfecting my no-fail lemon cake recipe – one I’ve fine-tuned over the years.
What’s your “lemon cake”?
We all have unique strengths—the abilities and skills that come naturally to us or that we’ve mastered. Think of your “lemon cake” as that strength you can rely on. What is the one skill or trait that consistently serves you well? For example, problem-solving, clear communication, or the ability to build strong relationships.
Refining your recipe
Having a natural aptitude for something is just the starting point. Like my lemon cake, your strengths need to be practised, refined, and adjusted over time. You don’t become a great communicator or an empathetic leader overnight; it takes deliberate effort and the willingness to learn from feedback.
Ask yourself:
- What opportunities can I seize to practise and sharpen this strength?
- Who can provide constructive feedback to help me improve?
- How can I stretch this skill in new ways to keep growing?
Your go-to in a pinch
Just like I turn to my lemon cake recipe whenever I bake at the last minute, you need a go-to strength for high-pressure situations. This is the skill you trust to shine, even when circumstances are tough.
When push comes to shove, do you rely on your ability to think strategically, stay calm under pressure, or inspire others to action?
Adapting to new contexts
Once you’ve mastered your “recipe,” it’s time to experiment. Now that I’ve perfected my lemon cake, I want to try a vegan or gluten-free version. Similarly, your strengths should be transferable across different settings. Can you apply your strategic thinking in a nonprofit environment? Can your empathy shine through in a remote team? Adapting your strengths to new challenges not only enhances your leadership skills but also strengthens your personal brand as versatile and innovative.
A slice of confidence
Perfecting your strengths and learning to adapt them builds confidence. When you know you’ve got a solid foundation—a tried-and-true lemon cake—you can approach new challenges with the assurance that you’ll succeed. And just like offering cake to those around you, sharing your strengths with others can create opportunities for connection and collaboration.
So, what’s your lemon cake? What strength can you perfect and share with the world? With the right mindset and practice, your personal brand will become just as memorable as a slice of perfectly baked lemon cake.
