Love, Little Planes and Leadership Lessons

February often arrives wrapped in red and pink, reminding us to celebrate love in all its forms. But this year, as I thought about the “Month of Love,” my mind drifted far from chocolates and roses. It carried me back to my recent experience a tiny plane, and a moment that gave me yet another leadership lesson.
A Journey of Love
I was on my way to St. Kitts & Nevis, my second home in many ways, but this time for the most meaningful reason yet: I was getting married. The first leg of the journey was smooth and familiar. A jumbo jet, nine hours in the air, and a flight crew who treated my wedding dress like royalty. I felt held, celebrated, and ready.
Then came the connection in St. Maarten.
Just How Little Is “Little”?
I knew the next plane would be small. But nothing prepared me for this little plane so tiny that even hand luggage had to be taken away and stored. As I stood on the tarmac, staring at the aircraft that looked more like a taxi, panic rose in my chest.
What about my dress? What about the ocean we had to cross? What about… everything?
A man in uniform approached, calm and unbothered by my rising anxiety. He promised to take care of my dress and assured me I’d be fine. I handed it over reluctantly and ducked, literally, to enter the plane. The ceiling was so low you couldn’t stand upright.
Then the man in uniform climbed into the pilot’s seat – He was actually the pilot.
Leadership at 10,000 Feet
The cockpit was open, visible to all fourteen of us. I watched every movement, every switch, every turn of the wheel. My panic was not subtle; the entire plane could hear my loud prayers and sharp breaths. Yet the pilot & co-pilot remained steady—focused, calm, and quietly confident.
As we descended, my fear peaked. I braced myself, convinced the landing would be rough. Instead, the wheels kissed the runway so gently that I only realized we had landed when the engines powered down.
When I stepped off the plane, the pilot greeted me with a wide smile, wedding dress in hand, and wished me the very best for my big day.
Little Plane, Leadership lessons
That short flight carried big lessons for me:
- Everyone deserves to be heard. I wasn’t a VIP, just a nervous passenger, but the pilot listened and acted with care.
- Stay calm under pressure. Even with an audibly nervous passenger behind him, he never wavered.
- Competence builds confidence. His skilful execution created safety, not just physically, but emotionally.
- Celebrate the safe landings. He didn’t rush off; he paused to acknowledge the moment with a smile.
The Heart of It All
Love isn’t only found in grand gestures. Sometimes it’s in the quiet assurance of a stranger, the steady hands of someone doing their job well, or the gentle landing after a turbulent moment.
And leadership? Sometimes it looks exactly the same.
If February is the month of love, then perhaps it’s also the perfect month to lead with love, calmly, confidently, and with enough care to help someone else land safely.
